Technological developments occur rapidly following the times. This development pushes the creativity of business people to find a business that is able to fill in the newly created land of opportunities in the digital market. This is a form of impact from technological developments that occur in all aspects of life, one of which is the entertainment aspect. This is what triggers the emergence of various entertainment services that are easily accessed via smartphones.
Nowadays, watching television is no longer the only option if we want to relax while watching something. A lot of streaming services are now easily accessible, such as Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, etc. So, what is a Streaming Service? By definition, streaming is the technology of transmitting audio and video files in a continuous stream over a wired or wireless internet connection. Streaming refers to any media content, live or recorded, and sent to a computer or mobile device over the internet and played back in real-time. Podcasts, webcasts, movies, TV shows, and music videos are common forms of streaming content. To enjoy the content, we only need a compatible device and connection.The history of streaming service dominance began in the early 2000s through two platforms, namely Youtube and Netflix, which provide digital entertainment content that we can enjoy anywhere and anytime. Along with the success of these two platforms, other companies began to launch their own streaming service platforms, such as Prime Video by Amazon, HBO max, Apple TV Plus, Hulu, and until now there are still many streaming services that are just starting out. In 2013, Netflix produced original content under the name “House of Cards” which managed to snatch many awards from other big screen cinema. It became a turning point in the history of Video Streaming Service. The streaming platforms initially only focused on providing feature films to their platform, but now they are starting to produce their own original series. With the success of various video streaming services, will the existence of television be threatened?
The success of streaming services will certainly threaten the existence of television. There are several reasons behind this threat. In terms of content, streaming services provide a very diverse variety of content that gives users freedom of choice. The content provided is not only films or series, there is creating content that is rarely found on television, such as gaming content, intimate talk shows, experiments, and so on. On the other hand, conventional television does not provide diverse choices and freedom of choice for its users. Streaming services have rules and policies that are more liberal for content creators in creating and publishing their content compared to television. Television has many rules and policies that severely limit the diversity of its content.
In terms of ease of access, streaming services allow users to access content anytime and anywhere as long as there is a capable internet connection. This is not found in conventional television, which requires users to watch through television sets which are generally large in size and the shows are not freely accessible because they have a predetermined viewing time. In addition, some streaming services also provide a feature where content creators can interact directly with the audience.
Despite having a larger number of viewers, television is slowly entering streaming services as a form of their adaptation to the Video on Demand (VOD) era. One advantage of television is that it provides free content. This outperforms some streaming services that require users to pay to access their services. However, as compensation, television users will encounter so many intrusive advertisements.
Technological developments that have an impact on the entertainment aspect have brought so many changes. The emergence of streaming services provides so many conveniences for the public in getting entertainment. The advantages of this streaming service are slowly changing the habits of the people who used to use television as their entertainment medium. This is certainly not good for the future of television. Television is required to continue to adapt or live by waiting for their death.
